Why Cooking with Solar?
In the face of the uncertainty of fossil fuels(coal, petrol, etc.) supply due to the burgeoning use by the ever-increasing population and technological advancements, the worldwide use of solar ovens has increased manifold. This has also reduced the reliance on firewood and coal. Even if you have electricity, a solar oven can be an effective, energy-saving way to cook your food.
A lightweight solar oven can be made out of a cardboard box if you want a portable oven for camping or your backyard. If you want a really heavy-duty solar oven that will last a long time, you can make one from wood or metal, or plastic with high insulation to prevent heat loss from the inner chamber of the cooker. Whatever may be your objective you can use a solar cooker to cook your food.
Given below is a recipe to make a Cheesy Omelet with the help of a Solar Cooker. Two methods were described. The first one requires three hours to prepare the omelet and the second one will take three to five minutes.
Types of Solar Cooker that can be used :
Source: Ajeet Kumar Rai,2016There are 3 types of solar cookers:
- Box cookers
- Panel cookers
- Parabolic cookers
Solar box cookers (sometimes called solar ovens) are the most common and inexpensive type of solar cookers. These box cookers are made of low-cost materials. The outer box is often made of wood/plastics. The inner chamber is made of insulating material like thermocol, aluminum foil (radiant reflector), feathers (down feathers are best), spun fiberglass, rock wool, cellulose, rice hulls, wool, straw, crumpled newspaper, etc. which is covered with clear glass or with plastic. The cover can be made of double glass or single glass with full transparency. "According to Solar Cooker International, solar box cookers cook at moderate temperatures and often can accommodate multiple pots. It can reach a temperature of 140˚ C." The solar box cooker needs direct sunshine to operate and "produces zero-emission".
The below recipe is for Box type of solar cookers only.

2) Add some vegetables.
3)Place some butter in a large mug and place it inside the solar cooker.
4)Use a metal mug black in color such that it can absorb maximum heat.
5) Place it under direct sunlight on a balcony or roof of your house for two hours(minimum)
6) When the butter has melted, add the milk with the eggs and cheese as much as your choice.
7) Now mix it thoroughly until it becomes frothy.
8)Keep the mixture in the solar cooker under direct sunlight for one more hour.
After one hour check inside the solar cooker and you will find your cheesy omelet ready.
You can also make the omelet by heating the mug first by placing it inside the cooker and then placing the cooker under direct sunlight for three hours. Use granite stones and stone chips in the inner chamber of the cooker to store the heat.
Then you can cook the same omelet within three minutes or until the butter melts and the mixture of egg yolk, cheese, salt, pepper, and vegetables become firm.
Along with saving electricity or gas, cooking with solar also ensure that all the inherent quality of the food remain as it is
