What is Rava Idli?
Rava Idli is a very old South Indian dish that first originated in Karnataka. This dish is commonly found in South Indian homes and uses ingredients like- Rava, curd, and some spices.
Pre-Requirement :
The procedure of making the Idli with Solar does not involve grinding and fermentation which made this breakfast one of the quickest breakfasts. You can make the Idli within a short span of time and off course with a Solar Cooker. You will need :
1)Rava/Sooji
2) Curd/Yogurt
3) Salt & ENO
For solar cooking, you will need an open space(balcony or rooftop) where unobstructed sunlight is available for at least 6 hours.
How to cook with Solar?
First step: Pre-heat the solar cooker.
The first step is to place the solar cooker under the sun well before the time you are planning to consume the food.
Place a black granite in the cooking place(the central point of the cooker). Depending on the intensity of sunlight the cooker will be preheated within 1 to 3 hours. When the cooker preheats, a safe bowl can be placed above the granite.
The Recipe
One cup of Rava/Sooji is first added to the safe bowl placed in the solar cooker.
Then in the same bowl, 1 Cup of Curd/Yogurt is added.
The ingredients are mixed to make the Idli paste. The paste is kept in a separate place for 20minutes.
Then 1 teaspoon of salt and ENO powder of the same amount is mixed into the paste.
The idli mold is greased with some oil. Now Idli mixture can be added to each mold along with 1/2 cup of water.
The entire idli mold is now required to be placed at the center point of the preheated cooker above the granite.
Close the cover of the cooker and keep it under the sun for around 1hs to finally prepare the idli.
Once cooked keep it in heat-resistant pots or devour it instantly.
Advantage of Solar Cooking
Solar cooking uses direct sunlight to cook food items. In some cookers, the sunlight is trapped by a double glass-doored box-like arrangement. In some other types of cookers, sunlight is concentrated into a focal point. That point becomes energized and food items are placed at that point for cooking.
The idea of using heat from sunlight has been around since the time of Archimedes of Syracuse in the Classical World. The sun provides us with an inexhaustible source of energy. Where the sun shines, you can cook with the sun.
If you cook using a microwave, a solar cooker can easily substitute the microwave. A solar cooker(box type) can easily accomplish the cooking of any food which can be cooked in a Microwave. The only requirement is the need to keep the cooker under sunlight. Use a granite plate in the central location of the cooker. This pot will help in storing the energy beyond the sunlight hours.
