Basically, there are 3 types of solar cookers:
Box cookers
Panel cookers
Parabolic cookers
According to JREDA :
"Solar box cookers (sometimes called solar ovens) are the most common and inexpensive type of solar cookers. These box cookers have very simple construction, and they are made of low-cost materials. The outer box is often made of wood. The inner box is made of insulating material, which is covered with clear glass or with plastic and often has a reflector of aluminum. According to Solar Cooker International, solar box cookers cook at moderate temperatures and often can accommodate multiple pots. It can reach a temperature of 140˚ C.
The solar box cooker, like other solar cookers, needs direct sunshine to operate and produces zero-emission. However, the temperature is low, and it cannot store and save solar heat for later use. Many nonprofit organizations promote these cookers worldwide in order to help reduce fuel costs and to slow down deforestation caused by firewood collection and charcoal production. That is why it is suggested to use a granite plate. This plate will help to conserve the heat such that one can cook with the solar oven even under the overcast sky."
Today I will share the procedures to prepare baked oatmeal in a box-type solar cooker.
Ingredients:
3 cups oats
1 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup butter, melted
Procedure
In a medium-sized bowl, the oats, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon are to be mixed. In another bowl of similar size, mix the egg, milk, and butter. The mixture is required to be stirred until all the materials are blended well.
Solar Cooking Part
Now grease a black baking pan or bowl with butter/ghee and then pour both the mixtures into it. Place the bowl in the central part of the solar cooker.
Note:
Preheat the solar cooker by keeping the cooker under sunlight for 2 to 3 hours. Place a granite plate or black-coloured steel plate at the central point of the cooker. Once preheated, then keep the baking pan/bowl with the oat mixture upon the plate.
Close the container and keep the cooker under sunlight for an hour. At the end of one hour, your oatmeal will be baked. Place some blueberries or peanut butter on it and serve.
